Specialists investigate council-owned depot

Work is taking place at Wakefield Council's depot on Altofts Road in Normanton over the next fortnight from August 26 to September 4.

The depot, currently occupied by the council and some of its contractors, has been identified in the authority’s local development planning guide for possible development in the future. As part of the site preparation process, groundwork investigations are now being carried out.

A specialist company has been hired to carry out the work because a small part of the site was home to a factory involved in detonator manufacture in the 1940s.

Denise Jeffery, Wakefield Council’s Cabinet Member for Economic Growth and Skills, said: “We have put precautions in place to ensure the work is carried out safely.

“There may be occasional low level noises but there should be no disruption to local residents or businesses during the work.”

The work will be carried out between 8am and 6pm.

The council has stressed that no decision has been made yet on the future of the site.

Any proposals for the area will be subject to the usual planning process.

A letter has been sent to nearby residents advising them of the work.
