Welfare end campaign with defeat at Grimsby

MISSED chances led to Hemsworth MW ending their North Eastern Counties Division 1 programme with a 3-0 defeat at Grimsby Borough.

Andy Hayward, Colin Williamson and Craig Goodyear, all failed to cash in on gilt-edged chances for the visitors before Borough snatched the lead in their first attack in the 15th minute, George Newby lobbing Dale Walstow from the edge of the penalty area.

Hemsworth continued to pass smoothly with Lee Swift and Ross Haywood almost putting them on terms, only for Luke Fanthorpe to improve the home advantage after a breakaway in the 43rd minute.

Some of the fire went out of the Welfare raids after the interval, although the home defence were kept on their toes.

However, Freddie Cass rounded off the Grimsby tally when he curled a left-footed shot just inside the far post.

Lee Swift and Colin Williamson worked hard for Hemsworth.
