HEMSWORTH MW made it six wins on the spin in all competitions at the weekend when they beat Rossington Main 2-1 at the Fitzwilliam Sports Complex.

Wayne Benn’s men are in scintillating form and their latest success, against a side just two points behind them going into the game, will cement their promotion aspirations in Northern Counties East League Division 1.

Hemsworth dominated the early pressure, putting together some good passing exchanges and seeing Andy Hayward come close with a header.

Iwan Hanley-Heeley also went close while at the other end MW stopper Dale Walstow had to make a brilliant save on 20 minutes to keep the scores level.

Jon Impey was next to threaten the Main goal before Hemsworth found the breakthrough just after the half-hour mark.

Welfare were awarded a free-kick 25 yards out and Hanley-Heeley curled an effort into the top corner to give the hosts the lead.

Lewis Pearce had a good chance to double Hemsworth’s lead but Main hadn’t thrown in the towel and twice came close to levelling before half-time.

The impressive Hanley-Heeley was forced off at the break, Lee Dawson taking his place, and Hayward had a header well saved shortly after the restart.

But Main got on terms in the 66th minute when Jordan Hatton struck a fine leveller.

The game could have gone either way and both teams went looking for the winner.

It went to Hemsworth with five minutes to go when a weak back pass was intercepted by Damion Liddle, who produced a fine finish to secure the three points for the on-song hosts.

Richard Elson shone to win the man-of-the-match award and Jon Impey was runner-up.

Hemsworth will be looking for more Christmas cheer on Boxing Day when they make the short trip to face mid-table AFC Emley at the Welfare Ground, kick-off at 1pm.
