Mixed Martial Arts fighter Scott Askham has opened a new gym in Hemsworth.
Based above The Alpha pub on Southmoor Road, ASW Hemsworth opened its doors last Monday.
There has been a good response towards Scott’s gym from within the local community, something highlighted by his wife, Ella.
She said: “We’re still trying to get the message out through word of mouth but everyone has been really positive about it.
“We’ve also had a good response from the ASW Hemsworth Facebook page and hopefully things will go from strength to strength.
“The sessions are aimed at anyone between the ages of five and 45-years-old but anyone is welcome to attend. It’s mainly for adults but there are children’s sessions on as well. The sessions will focus mainly on boxing, wrestling and thai boxing.”
Scott has been interested in opening a gym for a long time and it gives him a chance to coach other potential athletes in conjunction with his own training.
“He knows he can’t go on fighting forever,” Ella added. “It gives him something to focus on after he has finished fighting.
“It has been something Scott has always wanted to do. He loves what he does and enjoys teaching.”
Scott’s next fight sees him take on Polish fighter Krzysztof Jotko and Ella adds it is “hard to watch him,” from the sidelines.
“It’s a struggle for his mum and dad to watch him but I go on adrenalin. I tend to face away and go by the crowd’s reaction as to how he’s doing.”
The gym is open Monday to Saturday with a full list of opening times and classes available on ASW Hemsworth’s Facebook page.
