Castleford Tigers came crashing down to earth with a dreadful display in a 22-0 defeat at Huddersfield Giants.
The Tigers slipped to their fourth loss in five Super League matches after they looked a shadow of the side that played so impressively to score seven tries in the previous week’s 42-14 win against Wigan Warriors.
Huddersfield dominated the second-half in a low-quality game and snapped up their chances to achieve a second successive win.
Neither team showed much fluency in a scrappy first-half littered with handling errors, although the Tigers dominated possession and made most of the running.
The visitors had the better chances and were unfortunate to be 6-0 behind at half-time.
A 40-20 by former Castleford player Jamie Ellis led to Huddersfield going close in the 15th minute when Joe Wardle forced his way over but the effort was ruled out by the video referee because the centre lost control of the ball.
The Giants did well to survive Tigers pressure.
Andy Lynch was halted just short, James Clare was bundled into touch near the corner Matt Cook was held up over the line.
The Giants broke the deadlock three minutes before half-time when Castleford’s defence was caught out by Ellis who dummied his way over and Danny Brough converted.
Ukama Ta’ai put the Giants further ahead three minutes into the second-half when he took Brough’s short pass and burst through flimsy tackling to score.
Brough’s conversion made it 12-0 and left Castleford with a mountain to climb.
Castleford were unable to build any sustained pressure and they fell further behind in the 61st minute when Aaron Murphy went over at the corner.
Brough added a penalty goal four minutes later and the Giants complete the scoring with Jermaine McGillvary’s late try.
Little went right for the Tigers whose handling let them down badly as they were kept scoreless by Huddersfield’s solid defence.
