Coach Daryl Powell believes Castleford’s players need to improve their decision making ahead of the Super League opener against Wakefield Wildcats at the Mend-A-Hose Jungle on February 8.
Powell was generally pleased with his side’s display in Sunday’s 20-18 pre-season win against Widnes Vikings but felt there were areas for improvement.
“It was a tough game and just what we needed,” said Powell.
“We got a couple of injuries out of the game which are disappointing but overall I was pretty happy with what we delivered.
“There are some areas we need to improve but I thought attitude wise we were really good.
“Defensively I think we are in front of we thought we would be. In our last two games, we have shown a fantastic attitude defensively.
“With the ball we still have some work to do. I don’t think we are as crisp as we would like to be and our decision-making is not as good as it needs to be so we need to sharpen up. Our organisation needs to be a little bit better
“Obviously, we have the training field now for two weeks.”
Powell was again pleased with the performances of Denny Solomona, Ashley Gibson and Jordan Tansey in last Sunday’s game.
“There have been some players who have really gone well in the pre-season matches like Ashley Gibson, Jordan Tansey and Denny Solomona,” he added.
“Gibson and Tansey have really stepped up from last year and the competition for places is going to be even tougher this year. Some of the guys who struggled a bit last year are having a real go.”
