Hemsworth squash ace Katie Smith has received a big boost with a much-needed sponsorship deal she hopes will help fire her up the rankings.

The 19-year-old professional has welcomed Horbury-based Energy Services (Business Power) Ltd, the north of England’s leading energy supplier, on board to help her financially in her quest to impress on the world stage.

Smith, who was recently crowned Yorkshire Senior Ladies champion for the third successive year, has turned her attentions to the senior women’s circuit on a full-time basis and is set to compete in big open age tournaments around Europe this year with the aim of climbing up the world rankings.

To do that, the Pontefract Squash Club star needs the help of a sponsor to help finance her travels and Energy Services have stepped in to help Smith make a name for herself on the world squash stage.

Smith had the company’s financial help last week when she flew to Finland to compete in the Savcor Finnish Open, part of the WSA (Women’s Squash Association) World Tour, her first taste of senior women’s action overseas.

And she had a good tournament, eventually bowing out to the number one seed, Norway’s Lotte Eriksson, in a close-fought match.

Smith played well to beat Finland’s ‘Golden Girl’ Emilia Soini in her first match and return home with some prize money for her efforts.
