SOUTH Elmsall swimmer Shannon Dodson took her talents to the national stage recently when she excelled in the British Gas ASA National Inter-County Championships.

The 14-year-old, who attends Minsthorpe Community College, has enjoyed a successful year in the pool so far and it got better at the national event at Ponds Forge in Sheffield.

Dodson, who competes for Doncaster Dartes, represented Yorkshire for the first time against counties such as Kent and Essex but showed no nerves with an impressive performance in the backstroke.

She finished second in her heat in the 14-15 year-old category and seventh overall against some of the best young swimmers from around the country.

Her performance helped Yorkshire to finish second overall, behind winners Lancashire.

And she’ll be looking forward to a return to the competition next year, where she’ll be at the older end of the category due to the nationals taking place just after her birthday.

There’s been no rest for the super swimmer, who’s currently on a training camp in Los Cristianos, Tenerife, with her Doncaster Dartes club.

Most people travel to the Canary Islands for a holiday, but it’ll be anything but for Dodson and her club-mates, who will undergo a tough training regime to hone their swimming talents.

She returns from the annual trip on Friday and will take part in the Bradford Halloween event this weekend.

Her attentions will then turn to the bigger North Eastern Championships event, to be held in Sunderland, next to the Stadium of Light, in the first week of December.
