CASTLEFORD Tigers coach Ian Millward is tipping centre Michael Shenton to be a big success as the Super League club’s new captain.
The 26-year-old England international, who has rejoined the Tigers from St Helens on a four-year contract, takes over the captaincy from Danny Orr, who retired from playing at the end of last season.
Former Castleford academy player Shenton (pictured) scored 93 tries in 153 first-team appearances for Cas before joining Saints in 2010.
“I have been very impressed with Michael’s attitude and willingness to contribute in training so far,” said Millward.
“As a former England international he has made a big statement returning to Castleford and I believe he will be a great captain for us.”
Shenton was handed the number three jersey when Castleford announced their 2013 squad numbers this week.
The numbers given to the club’s other new signings are Justin Carney (2), Jake Webster (4), Jamie Ellis (7), Lee Gilmour (11), Weller Hauraki (12) and Jordan Tansey (19).
Millward added: “Numbers three and four are particularly exciting.
“We were vulnerable in the centres last year and we now have two players in Michael Shenton and Jake Webster with international experience to fulfil those positions.
“We also have two specialist second rowers in Lee Gilmour and Weller Hauraki at 11 and 12 that will offer us more experience in both attack and defence.”
Millward added that the Tigers were still looking to strengthen, funds permitting.
“The players have been training well but there’s no hiding from the fact that we ideally need extra depth,” he said.
“We are on the lookout for new additions but this is subject to club finances being available to enable us to recruit further.”
Jonathan Walker moves to number eight to accommodate the incoming Hauraki from Leeds Rhinos.
The Tigers squad is completed with promising youngsters Ben Johnston, Daniel Fleming, James Clare and Charlie Martin.
Half-back Johnston is number 21, Welsh international prop Fleming 22, winger Clare 23 and second rower Martin 24.
Castleford’s squad numbers for 2013 are: 1 Richard Owen, 2 Justin Carney, 3 Michael Shenton, 4 Jake Webster, 5 Kirk Dixon, 6 Rangi Chase, 7 Jamie Ellis, 8 Jonathan Walker, 9 Daryl Clark, 10 Craig Huby, 11 Lee Gilmour, 12.
