Sevens success and North recognition for Castleford girls
Castleford RUFC Girls enjoyed more success when the under 15s won the Durham Club sevens tournament at Darlington.
Relishing the extra space, they played some excellent rugby and their handling, passing and overall support play was exceptional. They thoroughly deserved to win the tournament with only five tries in total scored against them in the four pool matches and the final. Danielle Waters earned the player of the tournament award in her first outing for the club.
In the pool Horden were beaten 36-12 as tries came from Danielle Waters (2), Lana Burke and Millie Walsh (2) and conversions by Waters and Walsh. A 38-0 win followed over Cockermouth with tries by Walsh, Abbie Lindley, Waters, Grace Dyke (2) and Mia Churm plus goals from Waters (3) and Lindley.
Ryton were next up and Esme Reynolds, Lindley, Waters and Walsh all crossed the line in a 24-12 win with two goals by Waters.
Malton & Norton were beaten 26-5 as Lindley (2), Reynolds and Walsh touched down and conversions were added by Waters.
In the final Castleford beat Hartlepool Rovers 34-0 with Waters (3), Churm (2) and Walsh the try scorers and Waters adding two goals.
This Sunday two members of the U15s squad, Hollie-Mae Dodd and Keara Bennett, will line-up for England Junior Academy North and four of the U18s squad, Kayleigh Waller, Emma Hardy, Tilly Churm and Abby Crowther, have been selected for the North U18s squad in the RFU Junior Academies sevens tournament in Birmingham to play Midlands, SE England and SE England.
The emphasis that the club put on development of players has borne fruit as four of their current U18s squad have been selected to trial for England U20s Women on June 5, a great achievement and a great reward for the work that everyone has put in. Jasmine Bell has also played for Yorkshire Senior Ladies this season and last Sunday she scored her debut try in the 59-7 defeat of Staffordshire that sets up a semi-final clash for Yorkshire against Lancashire at Broughton Park, Manchester also this Sunday, in the Gill Burns Women’s County Championship.
