Talented young Hemsworth boxer Codie Smith has become the National Junior champion.

A series of brilliant displays earned the teenager the England Boxing National Junior title in the class A category in the 46-48kg eight category.

First he retained his Yorkshire title with a first round stoppage then he went to Manchester in the pre-quarter-finals, winning unanimously against an opponent from Moss Side.

A trip to Hartlepool for the quarter-final followed and he beat the home fighter on a split decision, knocking the lad down in round two. Codie defeated Jorge Anderson, from Repton, with a unanimous verdict in the semi-final and beat Worcester City’s Leyton Butler in the final, again unanimously.

Next up, Codie is aiming to defend the Hull Box Cup he won last year, with the event taking place from June 1 to 3.

He thanked Stevie Smith, at Hull Boxing Centre, and Neil Wain and John Popplewell, from Ludus Magnus training centre, as well as sponsor Ian Kent, director of MC and C Utilities, of Kinsley, and all the supporters who follow him all over the country.
