HUDDERSFIELD GC’s Megan Lockett and Olivia Winning, of Rotherham GC, lie in joint ninth place, just three shots off the first-round lead in the Welsh Open Ladies Amateur Stroke Play Championship.

Both shot 80 as Delamere Forest GC’s Gemma Clews and Sinead Sexton (Lahinch GC) led the way at Conwy GC on 77.

In brutal conditions, Yorkshire champion Lockett came home in level par after hitting the turn in seven over while Scottish open stroke play champion Winning’s split was more balanced, 39-41.

Woodsome Hall GC’s Melissa Wood shot 82. So did Selby GC’s Ellie Goodall, one fewer than club-mate Megan Garland.

New Curtis Cup player Rochelle Morris (Woodsome Hall) carded an 86.
