Impressive hooker Paul McShane has come in for praise from his Castleford Tigers head coach, who is backing him to be in contention for a place in the England squad for this autumn’s World Cup.
Daryl Powell is delighted with the form of his number nine with the consistently high standard displays marking out McShane as one of the key players for the top of the table Tigers.
He said: “I tried to sign Paul McShane for quite a few years. I think he’s a natural number nine.
“He’s got a coach’s head on him, he understands the game, a smart player, tough. He’s been superb this year.
“He has to be somewhere there for international honours when it comes to the end of the year if he can maintain his current form.
“He’s in great nick, he’s enjoying what he’s doing, he’s a durable player and he’s been a stand-out for us this year.
“Our forward pack has been superb and he’s an integral part of that.”
Powell added: “He’s very clever with the subtle things he does in and around the ruck area.
“His pass accuracy is second to none and he’s a cheeky player with a confidence about him.
“All the forwards would say he’s been outstanding whether it’s getting the ball to the halves or the little subtleties he does with the forwards – he’s been a big player for us.”
