KINSLEY Boys got their season off to a flying start by progressing through the FA Vase 1st Qualifying Round with an extra-time win over Atherton Laburnum Rovers.

Both teams took time to settle on Atherton’s sloping pitch but Kinsley always looked the more threatening in front of goal.

Boys’ presure came to fruition when the hosts could only half clear a Kinsley corner and Callum Stapleton picked up the ball before running through a packed defence to slot home the opener.

The Lancashire outfit drew level early in the second half when Boys gave away a needless penalty and both sides had chances to win it late on.

Nash Connolly was twice thwarted for Kinsley while at the other end Danny Howe had to clear a shot off the line.

In extra time Kinsley took control and some fine passing allowed Stapleton to fire in his second to put Kinsley back ahead.

Josh Stacey soon extended Boys’ lead and just before the end Stapleton completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot to put the icing on the cake.

Kinsley will now host Rochdale Town in the next round on Saturday, September 15.

Boys begin their Sheffield County Senior League season tomorrow night, Wednesday, at Houghton Main (kick-off 6.15pm).
