Frickley Athletic brought their season to a close by adding silverware to the Westfield Lane trophy cabinet thanks to a thrilling 4-3 victory over Sheffield FC in the Sheffield and Hallamshire Senior Cup Final at Hillsborough.

Joe Wilcox scored an injury-time winner for the Blues at the home of Sheffield Wednesday on Thursday night as Karl Rose’s men eventually came out on top in an entertaining match that could have gone either way.

Indeed, the Blues had a nightmare start when Matt Roney fired Sheffield ahead just 43 seconds into the match.

Frickley had to be patient in search of the equaliser and they got on level terms six minutes before half-time through top-scorer Gavin Allott.

Buoyed by the leveller, Rose’s men, who ply their trade one step above Sheffield in the football pyramid, came flying out of the traps in the second half and took the lead through a Matty Bloor strike less than a minute after the restart.

The Blues took a big step towards lifting the cup just after the hour mark when substitute Luke Hinsley curled a brilliant shot into the back of the net to extend his side’s lead.

It put the South Elmsall side seemingly in control but Sheffield ensured a tense final ten minutes when Steve Woolley pulled a goal back from the penalty spot.

The Blues were crushed five minutes later when Andy Gascoigne bundled home a dramatic equaliser for the Evo-Stik Division 1 South side and the game looked to be heading for extra-time.

Frickley had other ideas and two minutes into added time Wilcox was in the right place at the right time to smash in the winner when Sheffield failed to clear the danger from a corner kick.

It sparked wild scenes of celebration in the Blues camp, a stark contrast to 12 months ago when Frickley were beaten 3-2 by Worksop Town in the final.
