Frickley Athletic target clean sheets after bolstering defence with hat-trick of signings

Frickley Athletic manager Karl Rose hopes a hat-trick of new arrivals helps firm up his side’s leaking defence.

Rose has welcomed goalkeeper Jamie Green and defenders Joe Wilcox and Gareth Clayton to bolster his back four in light of a season that has seen his men keep just four clean sheets in all competitions.

The Blues have conceded goals in each of their last ten matches, with the last time they thwarted their opponents coming as far back as early November.

Wholesale changes have been carried out to his squad’s defensive options, with full-back Chris Fisher also arriving at Westfield Lane earlier this month from Ossett Town.

The Blues’ new-look defence is set to be on show on Saturday when Frickley host Blyth Spartans in South Elmsall and Rose hopes they can get off to a flying start.

“It was a bit of a no brainer bringing in who we’ve brought in,” said Rose.

“We need to stop leaking goals and hopefully these new signings will enable us to do that.

“Hopefully they can hit the ground running against Blyth on Saturday.”

Green, 24, arrives from Brigg Town and previously played for Frickley during the 2006-07 season.

His arrival was prompted by the news that Tom Woodhead’s availability for the rest of the season will be hampered by work commitments.

Stopper Darren Shirt has also ended his short stay at the club and returned to Athersley Recreation, although Rose says the door is open for a return to Frickley in the future.

New defender Wilcox, 23, is the son of former Blues player and current Scunthorpe United assistant manager Russ.

Clayton, 27, arrives at Westfield Lane after starting the season with Scarborough Athletic. He has also played in Belgium.
