Frickley Athletic continue slow start with slender Buxton defeat

Frickley Athletic’s sluggish start to the new Evo-Stik Premier League season continued on Tuesday night when they suffered a 1-0 home defeat against Buxton.

Mark Reed’s 77th-minute strike was enough to send the Bucks away with all three points and leave the South Elmsall side with nothing to show from their opening two matches of the campaign.

Blues boss Karl Rose was desperate to see improvements from his men following Saturday’s 6-4 defeat at Stamford but although he got those, especially in defence, the outcome was the same.

Gavin Allott had a goal-bound header somehow kept out and the Blues also saw a strong penalty appeal turned down in a match of few chances.

Goalkeeper Tom Woodhead had little to do in the Frickley goal but he could do little to stop Reed’s match-winning 77th-minute header.

The Blues will now turn their attentions to a big Bank Holiday double header against Rushall Olympic at home on Saturday and Whitby Town away on Monday (both kick-off at 3pm).
