TALENTED young boxers from a Hemsworth boxing club were rewarded for a year of hard work at their end-of-year presentation night.

Hemsworth Alpha Boxing Club, run by head coach and former boxing ace Dave Radford, held its annual prize-giving night at their Alpha Club base.

Former British featherweight champion Alan Richardson, originally from Fitzwilliam, was in attendance to hand out the awards alongside Radford and fellow coaches David Hoyle and Steve Reay, as well as Alpha club helper Alan Bird.

The boxing club has gone from strength to strength in 2011 and has been helped by a number of visits from high-profile boxers.

Roberto Duran, the famous Panama fighter who went toe-to-toe with Alpha coach Radford in South Africa in 1997, Irish boxer Steve Collins and the late Smokin’ Joe Frazier are amongst the names to have paid a visit to the Hemsworth club since it opened.

The high-profile visits have helped to inspire the club’s budding young boxers and their progress was highlighted at the end-of-year event.

The club’s membership has continued to grow and those who enjoyed a successful 2011 collected their awards from former boxing ace Richardson at the presentation night.

There was also a raffle held on the night and the club would like to thank the local businesses that provided the prizes on offer on the night.

Maurice Allen Butchers, ADS Fitness, FX Vision and J Millea & Son Pet Shop, all based in Hemsworth, kindly provided the prizes for the raffle.

The blossoming club is always on the lookout for budding new boxers to come along and bolster its member numbers.

Boxers of all abilities are encouraged to attend.
