After opening their season with a defeat in a tough tie in the Emirates FA Cup, Hemsworth MW quickly bounced back with a big away win in their first match in the Toolstation NCE Premier Division at Clipstone on Tuesday.
Wayne Benn’s men put a real marker down for what they can achieve this season with a 7-2 success.
Clipstone actually took the lead, but it was 2-1 at half-time after Sam Jones struck twice for Wells. He went on to complete a hat-trick after the break when new striker Chris Ovington opened his account and further goals came from Richard Collier (two) and Bill Law.
Hemsworth made a disappointing start to the season proper when they crashed out of the FA Cup at the first hurdle with an extra preliminary round defeat at Runcorn Linnets last Saturday.
Wells beat the same opponents last year, but went down 2-0 this time with their hopes not helped by having to play the whole of the second half with 10 men after David Briggs was given a straight red card.
They kept battling against strong opponents, but Michael Simpson’s 84th minute goal to add to Kyle Hamid’s effort in the first half sealed their fate and ensured no FA Cup heroics for Wells this year.
Hemsworth play their first home game of the new season when hosting Barton Town on Saturday (3pm) in the NCE Premier. They then have a big local derby away to Pontefract Collieries next Tuesday (7.45pm).
Wells, meanwhile, have signed Tafadzwa Mumbanya from Ossett Albion on a dual registration basis and hope to have striker Danny Critchlow back available after a long term injury in the next month.
