Frickley Athletic bagged their first win of pre-season on Tuesday night with a hard-fought victory over Shaw Lane Aquaforce at Westfield Lane.
Jimmy Ghaichem netted early on, but Aquaforce gave a good account of themselves before two late goals settled the match.
The visitors made a lively start to the match, Danny Frost shaving the bar with a rasping shot before John Cyrus forced Tom Woodhead into a smart save.
But Frickley opened the scoring with their first real attack, Ghaichem converting Danny Redfearn’s cross from eight yards.
Aquaforce came back and were unlucky not to level the scores as they hit the bar again, this time from Danny Barlow’s free-kick.
Chris Coy then saw his shot turned round the post by Woodhead, before the away side hit the woodwork for an astonishing third time, Luke Danville thumping a header against the crossbar.
The second half was a more disjointed affair as both teams made changes, but top-scorer Gavin Allott nearly doubled Frickley’s lead with a clever flick over Josh Herreng before the keeper recovered to grasp the ball.
The Blues finally got their second goal in the 80th minute as Ollie Jackson drilled in a superb drive, and the win was safe minutes later as Luke Hinsley made use of a tiring away defence to guide the ball home.
Frickley’s next match is a home encounter with Championship side Barnsley on Saturday, kick off at 3pm.
