Barnsley extended their unbeaten run to three games courtesy of a 2-0 victory over Gillingham at Oakwell.

Ben Pearson drilled in the opener from 25-yards midway through the first-half and Sam Winnall slotted home a second just before the break.

Jake Hessenthaler hit the post late on for Gillingham in their search for a consolation but the Reds stood firm, moving up to eighth place in the League One table.

Luke Norris fired an effort just past the Barnsley post early on as the Gills made the early running but the Reds opened the scoring 19 minutes in.

Josh Scowen’s cross was not properly cleared and the ball broke to Pearson, who lashed home from distance to register his first goal for the club.

Kadeem Harris was unlucky not to double the lead after cutting in from the left-wing but found Stuart Nelson in inspired form to keep him out.

Barnsley did eventually double the lead just before the break as Marley Watkins shrugged off a challenge before pulling the ball back for Sam Winnall to sweep home.

A quiet second-half could have opened with a goal for the Gills as Emmanuel Osadebe fired goalward but Nick Townsend denied him.

Rory Donnelly fired just over the Barnsley crossbar late on while Jake Hessenthaler saw his injury time header bounce back off the post and away to safety.

Justin Edinburgh’s side suffered consecutive defeats for the first time in his tenure while Lee Johnson’s Reds are up to eighth.
