Hemsworth MW rediscovered their goal touch as they made it through to the fourth round of the NCE League Cup with a 4-2 win away to Barton Town on Tuesday night.
Sam Jones sent them on the way when he converted a third minute penalty and it was 2-0 on 26 minutes as Brad Dockerty netted.
Luke Aldrich pulled a goal back for the hosts after the break, but Seon Ripley made it 3-1 when heading home Harry Steeple’s cross.
Again Barton hit back through Daniel Chambers in the 90th minute only for an injury time goal by Sidney Santos to seal Hemsworth’s place in the next round.
Hemsworth were held to a goalless draw by Athersley Recreation despite dominating their Premier Division game at home last Saturday.
They started well enough with Sam Jones working space well only to fire wide and Andrew Higgins seeing a header cleared off the line.
Seon Ripley had the best chance, but was unable to convert a header from eight yards out.
Wells missed more opportunities after the break and had a big shout for a penalty turned down as Athersley clung on for a draw.
Manager Wayne Benn said: “Athersley came to defend and make life difficult and they have every right to do that.
“It was up to us to break them down and we didn’t.
“Our lads feel aggrieved not to have been awarded a penalty – but that shouldn’t have been needed if we were more clinical.”
This Saturday Hemsworth are away to fifth-placed Worksop Town and they also host lowly Goole in the Premier next Tuesday (7.45pm).
