Hemsworth MW enjoyed their break from league action when they beat Cammell Laird 1907, from the North West Counties Premier Division, 3-1 in an FA Vase first qualifying round tie at the MDC Stadium on Saturday.
Up against higher ranked opponents, Wayne Benn’s men produced a fine display to be two up by half-time and they will now go on to play North West Counties Division One side Bacup Borough away in the second qualifying round on Saturday, October 3.
Bacup beat Hemsworth’s fellow NCE Division side Worsbrough Bridge Athletic 4-0 last Saturday so look like being tough opponents, but they are a division below Cammell Laird and Welfare can travel across the Pennines with some confidence after the way they saw off their first round visitors.
Jack Steers put Hemsworth on the way with a header from close range after 20 minutes and they doubled their lead 20 minutes later when Dom Blair fired home.
Blair struck again 20 minutes into the second half to make sure of Welfare’s victory with Franny Foy’s 75th minute effort a mere consolation for Cammell Laird.
With Hemsworth’s continued involvement in the FA Vase they have had to rearrange a league game as their home match with Worsbrough Bridge Athletic, due to be played on October 3, will now be played on Tuesday, November 3.
Hemsworth were back in league action on Tuesday night when they beat Westella VIP 5-2 at home in the Toolstation NCE Division One.
After an even first half ended 2-2 Welfare took control after the break as Bill Law added to his two goals from the first period to complete his hat-trick and Lee Swift and Jason Yates were also on target.
Welfare are on their travels this Saturday when they go to Knaresborough Town who have made a decent start to the season in the first division with 10 points from their first seven matches.
