In demand Hemsworth footballer John Stones admitted to being delighted by the reception he received on his return to Barnsley with the England under 21s last week.
The highly rated Everton and England capped defender, whose progress is now being monitored by Premiership big boys Manchester United and Chelsea, played 45 minutes of the England under 21 European Championships warm-up match against Belarus in front of 15,207 fans at Oakwell.
England won 1-0 and home fans in the crowd showed their appreciation of the player who started out at Barnsley by singing ‘that boy John Stones, he’s one of our own.’
“It was a special moment for me and my family, I will never forget that,” said Stones.
“I was really looking forward to going back to Oakwell, but I never imagined I’d get such a great reception like that. I owe Barnsley a lot and will always be grateful for the help and support I got when I started my career at the club.”
Stones will now take part in the European U21 Championships in the Czech Republic, which begin tonight for England when they take on Portugal (8.45pm).
