Hemsworth MW’s run in the FA Vase competition came to an end when they went down 3-1 at Irlam in a second round tie.

Wayne Benn’s men looked on course for victory as they led at half-time, but their hosts from the North West Counties League hit back strongly after the break.

An even start saw both sides cancel each other out initially before the first real chance was taken by Wells as Nash Connolly found the net with a low strike on 24 minutes.

It stayed 1-0 to half-time with both sides working hard without being able to open up the defences.

The game dramatically turned round within 10 minutes of the start of the second half as Irlam equalised through Connor Martin after the ball fell to him in the box and took the lead when Connor Braithwaite sent a looping header into the net.

Hemsworth tried to hit back. but struggled against a well organised home defence. Both sides went down to 10 men for the last 15 minutes after an Irlam player reacted to a foul by Harry Viggars and the referee produced a red card to both players.

Perry hit the crossbar for the home team, but Hemsworth were still in it until the third minute of added time when a mix-up between a defender and keeper allowed Liam Pollitt to nip in to make it 3-1.

Hemworth return to the NCE League this Saturday, at home to Athersley Recreation. They are also away to Barton Town in the NCE League Cup next Tuesday.
