Hemsworth MW played their part in an entertaining contest with Barnsley FC’s under 23s side as they continued their warm-up for the new season.
They were edged out in a seven-goal thriller, but played some decent football that augurs well for the NCE Premier campaign ahead.
Wayne Benn named a side that included some new additions, favourites from last year and a couple of trialists. They went 4-1 down early in the second half, but showed good spirit and could have snatched a draw at the end.
Goals from Jordan Barnett, Sam Fielding, Louis Walsh and a trialist gave Barnsley their victory and they were two up in a strong start before new striker Seon Ripley headed home Wells’ first.
The visitors restored their two-goal advantage before the break and added another nine minutes into the second half. But Dez Parker brilliantly slotted home from the edge of the box to reduce the arrears.
They then broke from a Reds corner and scored their third. Brad Dockerty was denied by a good save from Barnsley’s trialist keeper, but another of the new men, Jed Rashid, was on hand to make it 4-3.
Wells almost bagged an equaliser, but Dockerty was denied by a stunning reflex save from the keeper.
There was plenty for manager Benn to be pleased about in his team’s display and they now move on to play Nostell MW away tomorrow night (7.45pm).
