Hemsworth MW manager Wayne Benn says his club’s aim for the forthcoming season is to improve on last year’s finishing position of sixth in the Toolstation NCE Premier.

Benn is hoping his club can mount a promotion campaign after steady improvement in recent years, but is predicting a competitive league with plenty of sides going into a campaign that starts on Saturday with realistic chances of success.

He said: “It will be a tough league with probably eight to 10 teams who hope to be in the mix for promotion. We aim to be one of those, but our first aim as always is to improve on last season’s finishing position and we are quietly confident that we can achieve that.

“On the recruitment front, we are happy to have signed some really good players to complement the already fantastic group of players we have retained.

“We still need to make decisions on a couple of trialists and we are still actively looking to improve the squad and we are having to be very patient on that score. But I’m happy with where the squad is at the minute and now it’s about getting everyone to August 4 fit and injury free if possible.”

Hemsworth open their league season with an away game at Hall Road Rangers this Saturday (3pm).

Their final pre-season match did not quite go as well as they had hoped as they lost 4-0 at Nostell MW, but manager Benn admitted he did not pay much attention to results in these games, using them to look at as many players as he could.
