Hemsworth MW missed out on reaching the semi-finals of the NCE League Cup on Monday night when they lost 4-1 to Premier Division leaders AFC Mansfield.
Wayne Benn’s men were level with 25 minutes left and giving as good as they got only to concede three goals in the closing stages – and it was their former player, Nick Guest, who did most of the damage.
Guest put Mansfield ahead in the opening minute, but Hemsworth deservedly levelled through Sam Jones three minutes into the second half.
It stayed 1-1 until Ellis Wall restored Mansfield’s lead. Any hopes of a comeback were then ended as Guest went on to bag a hat-trick.
Hemsworth’s hopes of a top five finish in the Premier Division took a couple of blows when they could only collect one point from two away games.
They drew a rare blank when held to a goalless draw at relegation battlers Athersley Recreation in midweek and went down 3-1 against fifth-placed Maltby Main last Saturday.
In both games they paid the price for some poor finishing, especially at Maltby when they created many more clear opportunities than their hosts yet found themselves three down before Chris Ovington netted what turned out to be a mere consolation on 57 minutes.
Hemsworth are due to play Harrogate Railway Athletic tonight before their final two league matches at home Parkgate on Saturday and away to Hall Road Rangers next Thursday.
