John Stancliffe won his first match as manager of Frickley Athletic as the Blues came back from Worksop Town with a victory in a third round Sheffield & Hallam Senior Cup tie last night.
It was a real battle for the Evo-Stik League side, but a welcome clean sheet helped them to a deserved 1-0 victory.
Stancliffe selected a strong side for the tie and had Sam Liversidge making his first start after a long injury lay-off.
Frickley laid siege to the Worksop goal early on, Jacob Hazel smashing a shot just over from distance then sending a header narrowly over and Liversidge going close with two strikes.
Hazel had three more chances before the hosts went down to 10 men after a player swung a punch at Jameel Ible to earn a straight red card.
The game remained goalless into the second half when Danny Rowe went close and was well off target with another effort. Hazel made a great break only to see his shot well saved by the keeper.
Rowe was inches over with a shot from distance and there were still no goals until super sub Lewis Szanto came on to win the game with an 86th minute winner after collecting a smart pass into the box from Jed Wilkinson.
Frickley played out the remainder comfortably to book their passage into the quarter-finals.
