Eight under 11s teams in the region competed in Friday’s second floodlit tournament staged by Frickley Athletic at Westfield Lane.

The group stages consisted of two groups of four, with teams playing each other twice.

Group A winners Pontefract Collieries Blues beat group B runners up Balby Sports under 10s 3-0 to reach the final. In the second semi-final, group A runners up Frickley AFC Blues defeated group B winners Pontefract Collieries Raiders in a penalty shoot-out after the game finished scoreless.

Frickley AFC Yellows just missed out on the second spot of group B which meant their tournament had ended but manager Jake White was happy with 90 per cent of their performance and how they applied themselves in their first floodlit tournament.

After beating Pontefract Raiders, it proved one step too far for Frickley AFC Blues to beat Pontefract Blues, as they lost the final 1-0.

Pontefract scored mid way through the first half with really their only effort on goal.

Unfortunately, despite creating plenty of chances, Frickley failed in front of goal and their finishing let them down.

Overall manager Allan Howcroft was pleased with the performance and admitted Pontefract wanted the final a little more as they were defending the title from last year.

Frickley Academy manager Howcroft thanked everyone who made the tournament possible - directors of Frickley Athletic FC for use of the facilities, the match officials, all the helpers, all the teams for entering, all the parents for their support in the cold weather and a special thanks to the boys who represented all the teams.
