Frickley Athletic maintained their encouraging pre-season run when they took on a Barnsley FC XI at the newly named SW Jackson Utilities Stadium on Tuesday night.
After victories over young sides put out by Hull City and Leeds United, the Blues made it a hat-trick of Football League scalps when they emerged victorious 1-0.
Impressive new recruit Zeph Thomas scored the only goal of the game in the 16th minute as Luke Hinsley’s penalty was saved, as was Reece Thompson’s follow-up, but Thomas headed in the second rebound.
Only the heroics of keeper Jack Walton prevented a bigger win for the Blues as he made a string of top drawer saves.
Frickley showed their intentions in the fourth minute when Thompson, on trial with Barnsley but allowed to play for the Blues, showed blistering pace to race in behind the visitors’ back line and his cross almost ricocheted into the net but dropped just past the post.
Brad Dockerty then tested Walton after dancing into the area on six minutes before the 17-year-old keeper had to make an even smarter save to keep out a long range Luke Hinsley powerblaster.
Frickley went ahead after Hinsley was fouled in the area to bring about the penalty from which Thomas scored after Walton had saved Hinsley’s spot-kick and Thompson’s follow-up.
Jameel Ible’s acrobatic attempt at the far posts was denied by Walton and Luke Hornsey then blasted wide when one-on-one with the keeper.
Walton made three saves in the space of five seconds on 29 minutes, denying Thompson twice and Thomas.
But Sam Leigh made a good save at the other end to deny Kneeshaw
In the second half, Beckles missed a good chance for Barnsley and Leigh made his best save of the night to tip Otande’s strike away.
There were fewer chances although Penty brought another good save from Walton.
