Frickley Athletic conceded three second-half goals as they slipped to a second pre-season defeat at home to Scunthorpe on Tuesday.
With the scores tied at 1-1 after the first 45 minutes, the Iron showed their superior quality as they pulled away to complete a comfortable 4-1 win, but Frickley can be proud of their efforts.
Following on from the 4-0 defeat to Doncaster Rovers earlier this month, Frickley faced another football League side in League Two Scunthorpe, who were managed on the night by former Blues defender Russ Wilcox.
Frickley started strongly, but found themselves behind when triallist Deon Burton powered in a header.
Frontman Gavin Allott showed his quality to set up an equaliser before half-time, beating three men before crossing for Joe Fox to convert.
A raft of changes at the interval disrupted Frickley’s flow, and Scunthorpe took full advantage as Sam Winnal fired home minutes after the restart.
Scunthorpe were beginning to pull away, and made the win safe with a third goal, Hakeeb Adulakin slotting home minutes after Curtis Bateson had rattled the post.
Craig Beattie finally got the reward for his persistence as he added a fourth for the visitors, rounding Tom Woodhead and rolling the ball into the empty net, having earlier been foiled by the Blues stopper.
Frickley continued to battle and tested James Severn through Sean O’Reilly on two occasions, but Scunthorpe saw out the final few minutes to complete a solid win.
Frickley’s fixtures for the new season were also announced on Tuesday, the Blues kicking off away to Stamford on Saturday, August 17.
The first game at Westfield Lane will be against Buxton on Tuesday, August 20, while Frickley will visit Stocksbridge Park Steels on Boxing Day.
The Blues wrap up the season away to Worksop Town on Saturday, April 26.
