Frickley Athletic bagged an impressive 2-2 draw in their third pre-season friendly against Sheffield Wednesday at Westfield Lane on Saturday.
Having lost to Doncaster Rovers and Scunthorpe in the last month, Frickley competed well with a young Owls side and were good value for their draw.
All four goals came in the first half, Luke Jeffs and Jason Yates finding the net for the hosts while Brandon Zibaka and Arnaud Honore scored for Wednesday.
Frickley started the match strongly, Jake Picton testing visiting keeper Cameron Dawson on two occasions before Wednesday regrouped to take the lead.
Mani Dieseruvwe provided a precision pass for Zibaka, who made no mistake to beat Tom Woodhead from 12 yards.
Frickley were not dispirited by the goal, and got back on level terms through Jeffs’ 30-yard free-kick before taking the lead themselves mid-way through the first half.
Jimmy Ghaichem picked out Yates with a good pass, the frontman beating two defenders before drilling home from 25 yards.
Honore completed the scoring minutes later with a low drive, and despite further chances for both sides, they went in level at the break.
The second period was a disjointed affair due to the high number of substitutions from both sides, who were keen to give as many players as possible the opportunity to impress in the match.
Korey Dyer-Stewart had perhaps the best chance after seizing on an error in the Owls’ defence, with Picton sending his shot from the resultant corner well over the bar.
Woodhead then had to be alert to foil Dieseruvwe from close range as Wednesday looked to strike the knockout blow, but both teams were content to see the game out for a draw.
Frickley next face Championship opposition in the shape of Barnsley at home on Saturday, kick off at 3pm.
