Frickley and Minsthorpe Community College, meanwhile, have announced a new partnership that will see Athletic start their own full-time youth team football scholarship for talented 16 to 18-year-olds hoping to pursue a career in professional football as well as receive a high quality education at the same time.
Successful players will be given a two-year scholarship with Frickley and will combine a programme of A-level and BTEC courses with a minimum 10 hours football coaching a week.
Scholars also have a chance to play at the highest level. Frickley are aiming to compete in the National League Under 19 Alliance and Cup competitions as well as in the prestigious FA Youth Cup. All home fixtures will be played at the Westfield Lane stadium.
The first step on the ladder is an open trial at Westfield Lane on Friday, March 24, starting at 6pm.
It will be full-time education and football programme, a two-year course where participants will train in a full-time professional football environment on a daily basis and receive UEFA B qualified coaching. Scholars will can also excel in the classroom at Minsthorpe Community College and can fully participate in both the academic and enrichment opportunities offered by the college.
Scholars will be supported to make strides towards the Frickley first team and into professional football through their extensive scouting contacts who frequently visit games, or continue into higher education at university.
The football club and college are hoping to make this is a great opportunity for undiscovered players, those who have been released by a professional club but still want to progress their football career or, perhaps, ‘the unpolished diamond’ that has slipped through the net.
Minsthorpe Community College offers an education programme including BTEC Sport qualifications, a range of A-Level subjects and GCSE Maths & English re-takes. In addition to this, scholars will have access to careers advice, daily tutoring, and full pastoral support from a dedicated head of year as well as sports leadership opportunities within the school setting where they will regularly work with PE staff.
The college also has an outstanding range of facilities that are available to the scholars, such as a 3G football pitch and a state of the art fitness suite, where players will receive strength and condition sessions delivered by qualified instructors.
