Honours finished even in Sunday’s pre-season clash between Championship outfit Featherstone Rovers and amateurs Featherstone Lions in which five players were sent off in the second-half.
The match at Big Fellas Stadium, which ended 6-6, was marred by an ugly 52nd minute brawl that saw Rovers pair Jacob Jowitt and Ethan Flowers and Lions forward Scott Glassell dismissed.
Lions centre Josh Hardcastle and Scott Glassell’s brother Danny were red-carded for dissent in separate second-half incidents.
The teams shared the Bill Cook Memorial Trophy after they both scored one converted try.
National Conference League Division One Lions were the best team in a scoreless first-half while Rovers, fielding mainly reserves and first-team squad forwards Luke Cooper and Jack Coventry, came more into the game in the second period.
Lions went closest in the first 40 minutes when Scott Glassell was halted just short and Danny Glassell was inches away from scoring from his own neat kick.
With heavy rain and a water-logged surface making play increasingly difficult, the second-half was reduced to 30 minutes.
Lions finally went ahead in the 42nd minute when Danny Glassell scooped up a loose ball to plunge over for a try that Richard Frankland improved.
Rovers levelled in the 59th minute when Matt Stableford dived over for a touchdown that Liam Blockley goaled.
Lions went close to snatching victory in the dying minutes when Frankland was just wide with a 35-yard drop goal attempt.
Lions coach Jamie Rooney said afterwards: “I thought our lads had a real go and the same for the Rovers lads. I know they were only young kids but they got stuck in. I thought it was a really entertaining game, despite the conditions.”
