England football fans from across the country gathered at Frickley Athletic FC on Sunday to help raise money for the club’s redevelopment fund.
An England fans XI took on a Frickley XI at Westfield Lane to help boost the fund to £24,000 - almost half of the £50,000 needed to redevelop the club’s South Elmsall base.
In total he match raised £530 towards the fund through player fees, extra donations from players and supporters and a raffle.
The match was arranged by lifelong Frickley fan Chad Thomas, who has also been travelling home and away to watch England for the last seven years.
The idea for the fundraising match came about when Thomas was raising money for the fund through selling football cards on England fan buses in Moldova last September.
A club statement read: “The money raised at this event is a massive help for the club and Frickley Athletic would like to thank all the England fans players who gave up their free time and money in order to support the fund raising as well as thanking Chad for his efforts in arranging the game.”
Blues boss Karl Rose played in the Frickley team and scored in the 6-2 victory for the home side.
Jon Hood, Ethel Naylor, Mick Potato, James West and Neil Howden also netted as Frickley raced into a commanding 6-0 lead.
But in the last 20 minutes the England side pulled two goals back from the penalty spot, with Chad and Eddie Morrow grabbing a goal apiece.
