SOUTH Elmsall darts ace Mark Lawrence suffered an early exit from the Speedy Services UK Open in Bolton.

Lawrence, who reached the quarter finals of the competition in 2009, crashed out at the preliminary round.

He took on Jamie Robinson but lost 4-1 and didn’t progress to the ‘proper’ stages of the competition that many refer to as ‘the FA Cup of darts’.

Scotland’s Robert Thornton was the surprise winner, beating Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor in the final 11-5 at Bolton’s Reebok Stadium.

The victory was Thornton’s first major title in the PDC and it came after he trailed 2-0 early on.

It was only the sixth time Taylor had lost a major televised final in a trophy-filled career.
