A last minute Jamie Ellis goal sealed a thrilling 14-12 win for Castleford Tigers over reigning champions Leeds Rhinos at a soggy Wish Communications Stadium.

Ian Millward’s men were trailing 12-10 in the closing stages of their opening home game of 2013 before Ellis, who had earlier missed two kicks, stepped up to land a long range penalty to tie the scores.

Four minutes later he was on target again and the Tigers had a memorable win to end their losing streak in Super League, which had gone back to last summer.

Up against the Super League and world champions, Cas opened brightly and led 6-0 with a Jordan Tansey try and Ellis conversion.

Leeds hit back through Danny McGuire’s try and Kevin Sinfield’s goal only for the Tigers to lead 10-6 at the break with a Jake Webster try.

With Cas prop Nathan Massey sin-binned after the break the Rhinos took the lead through Ryan Hall’s try and Sinfield’s touchline conversion, but it was the Tigers who had the last word as the penalties turned in their direction and Ellis held his nerve to clinch a morale-boosting two points.
