Despite a rousing second half comeback Castleford Tigers were unable to give new head coach Daryl Powell a winning start in France as they lost 39-30 in a high scoring match with Catalan Dragons.

The Tigers looked set for a heavy defeat when 30-6 down at half-time, but made a real fight of their Super League contest after the break only to lose out in a thrilling finish.

Cas got the score back to 36-30 following tries by Jordan Thompson (two), Justin Carney (two) and Daryl Clark and five goals kicked by Jamie Ellis, but a late drop goal and penalty goal from Thomas Bosc ensured that the Dragons were to run out winners.

More on the game and reaction to it in this Thursday’s edition of the Pontefract & Castleford Express.
