DOMINANT Upton chalked up one of their best results in recent seasons as they smashed Fryston’s unbeaten run to pieces with a 32-26 win at Quarry Lane on Saturday.
Warriors topped the CMS Yorkshire League Division 1 table with eleven wins from as many matches going into the game but ever-improving Upton put them to the sword in scintillating style.
The hosts put Fryston under pressure from the off and were rewarded when Fran Welsh beat off three tacklers to cross the line.
The conversion was missed, only for Steve Beal to extend Upton’s lead with a penalty.
Warriors showed just why they’re the team to beat when they hot back with a converted try to level the scores.
But Upton were in determined mood and stamped their control on the game as Welsh scored his second try and Steve Froggett added a third, Beal converting to make it 16-4.
The visitors hit back again in an end-to-end match but the hosts were in no mood to lie down and Todd Williamson scored to make it 22-12.
The lead was cut to four points when Warriors scored a controversial try just before half-time.
It was a close-fought affair on the resumption with chances as a premium but Andy Iveson stretched Upton’s lead with an unconverted score.
Fryston, desperate to hold on to their unbeaten run, scored two unconverted tries to level - the second again coming in controversial circumstances.
Upton showed they’re made of strong stuff, however, and Iveson scored a superb match-winning try in the corner late on.
Beal added a penalty to complete the scoring and give Upton a superb victory.
They now take a break for the festive period, with games resuming on Saturday January 7.
