David Barends, the former Bradford and Wakefield winger, presented the awards when Upton ARFLC under 16s and 17s held their annual presentation at the club’s Quarry Lane headquarters.

The main under 16 award winners were Jimmy Mercer (player of year and players’ player of year), Aaron Cartwright (coaches player of year), Harley Axe (man of steel and most tackles in season), Dan Priestley (supporters player of year) and Jack Wicks (clubman of the year and most tries).

Jack Arnold and Jordan Taylor both receiving engraved plaques to recognise their development into Sheffield Eagles academy squad for 2015.

The under 16s and under 17s have both recently struggled for numbers and will merge in 2015 as the under 18s.

Barends, a former Upton ARLFC coach, gave a speech to the players which was well received.

He said young players need to eat, train and sleep properly and generally look after themselves.
