HEMSWORTH mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter Scott Askham will look to make it two wins from as many professional bouts when he enters the ring at Barnsley Metrodome next month, writes Nick Rigg.
Askham won his first professional fight in the full contact sport last October when he defeated London-based Lithuanian Andreas Jueska.
And the feisty fighter is aiming to continue his winning start as a pro when he takes on Newcastle fighter Leslee ‘Hollywood’ Ojugbana in Barnsley on Friday, March 11.
“It’s going to be a bit harder this time because he’s a more experienced fighter, but I’m confident I can win,” said the Hemsworth fighter.
“I felt ready to make the step up before my first professional fight for a while but it’s important for me not to have too many fights too soon.
“I’ve needed to improve on my work on the floor and I’ve done that in the few months since my last fight so I should be a better all-round fighter for this fight.”
Ojugbana has had 26 fights as a professional, winning 14, losing 11 and drawing one.
But although Askham has only had one professional fight - and one victory - to his name, he’s hoping his hard work in training and his performance at the European Championships in Portugal last month will help him to another success in the ring.
He won two bouts and lost one as he reached the quarter-finals of the Europeans, against some of the best MMA fighters from across the continent.
Training three times a week at the Ultimate Fight School at Doncaster Martial Arts Centre has also helped him prepare for fight number two.
And the omens are in his favour, with Askham winning all three of his bouts at the Metrodome so far - one as a professional and two as a semi-professional.
The 22-year-old won’t be the only MMA fighter from the area competing in Barnsley next month.
Mick Lockey and Nath Milner, who also train at Doncaster Martial Arts Centre with Askham, will be on the bill, which will see 18 bouts take place.
Tom Miller is the fourth member of a quartet of Hemsworth fighters who train in Doncaster, and he’ll be hoping to get himself on the bill soon.
Tickets for next month’s event at Barnsley Metrodome are priced at £30 or £300 for a VIP table of six.
The action starts at 7.30pm and tickets can be bout direct from Scott on 07584 250727.
