STRIKER Gavin Allott provided a ruthless display of finishing with a quartet of goals to help Frickley Athletic power into the next round of the Sheffield and Hallamshire Senior Cup with an emphatic 6-2 win over holders Worksop Town on Tuesday night.
The match, a replay of last year’s Hillsborough final, was tied 1-1 at half-time, with Allott netting the Blues goal from the penalty spot before the Tigers got level. But three goals in five minutes after the restart, two coming from Allott and Luke Hinsley, won it for Karl Rose’s side. Allott added his fourth and Chris Wood completed the rout.
Allott opened his account in the 11th minute from the spot. A poor back pass by former Blues defender Stuart Ludlam allowed Luke Jeffs to intercept and race into the penalty area before being hauled down by Town stopper Paul Bastock to give the four-goal hero an easy opener.
The Tigers, eager for revenge for their FA Cup defeat suffered against Frickley earlier this team, levelled in the 24th minute when Reece Twell saw his shot saved by Blues goalkeeper Tom Woodhead only for Lheyreux Menga to find the back of the net from the rebound.
The hosts needed just 25 seconds to regain their lead after the interval. Allott ended a penetrating run with a low shot that squeezed under Bastock.
Before the visiting defence could regroup Hinsley drilled in the Blues’ third goal and Allott pounced on a dropped ball by Bastock to complete his hat-trick and leave the hosts in full control of the contest.
It took Worksop time to recover but they kept plugging away for a way back into the game with Woodhead doing well to thwart efforts from Menga and Lee Beeson.
Their hopes of defending the cup were all-but over in the 73rd minute, however, when Allott took his tally to four and Frickley’s lead to 5-1.
The visitors grabbed a consolation through Menga but Frickley had the last say when substitute Chris Wood scored at the second attempt to wrap-up the scoring.
