Warehouse and office block costing over £25m will create 550 jobs

A warehouse and office block costing more than £25 million to build and capable of employing more than 550 workers has been approved for Glass Houghton.

The huge 259,000 sq ft development will be built on land off Whistler Drive and was part of the spoil tip of the former colliery.

Once up and running, it would be operational around the clock.

Coun Denise Jeffery, cabinet member for economic growth and regeneration, said: “This is good news for the district, as it offers jobs and opportunities and supports our ambitious plans for economic growth.”

The main site currently constitutes a cleared area which has been prepared in readiness for development.

The application is the latest in a growing number of developments on the old Glass Houghton Colliery.

Planning permission has already been established for mixed use of the surrounding site, including the new sports stadium, 1,120 homes, restaurant/pub use, and office and light industrial development.

In April a new £7m bypass was proposed in Castleford, linking the roundabout at Bruce Smeaton Way and Cutsyke Road to Whistler Drive.
