College students and staff have paid tribute to a “popular” teenager who died when a car she was in struck a tree.
Hannah Hunter, 16, was killed when the Seat Leon she was travelling in came off the road and crashed on Chevet Lane, in Notton, on Tuesday night.
The Principal of Hemsworth Arts and Community College said both staff and students are trying to come to terms with her death.
Principal Pam Massett said: “Obviously everybody is devastated. She was a well-liked, popular girl and the staff who worked with her are very upset by the news.
“We have a team of student mentors and liaison officers who are helping our students to deal with this.”
Mrs Massett said Hannah, who was from Wakefield, had performed particularly well on a hairdressing course at college.
She said: “She had a real flair for that and her tutor spoke of her very highly,”
Police are appealing for witnesses following Tuesday’s incident, which happened at 11.35pm near Smawell Lane.
