Top cyclists will return to Pontefract later this year when the town’s grand prix race takes place for the second time.
Olympic gold medallist Steven Burke took part in last year’s Pontefract Grand Prix , which was watched by about 1,000 spectators.
The event, organised by Polypipe Cycling Team, Wakefield Council and British Cycling, will return on Sunday, June 7.
Ashley Brown, event organiser, said: “We’re hoping for good weather and some great racing to support the grassroots of cycling and to help celebrate, and feel part of, an amazing summer of cycling across the Five Towns.”
The route will see cyclists start on Market Place before heading out on Valley Road, onto Southgate, back on Ropergate, before looping back around the town centre via Shoemarket, Salter Row and Woolmarket.
Coun Les Shaw, Wakefield Council’s cabinet member for culture, leisure and sport, said: “I look forward to welcoming the Pontefract Grand Prix once again this year. It promises to be a wonderful day for the district.
“Yorkshire has long been a county with a strong cycling tradition and, of course, hosting the Tour De Yorkshire will add to that reputation, following the success of the Grand Depart from the county last year.
“There is obviously a great enthusiasm for cycling and the Pontefract Grand Prix is sure to be well received.
“Working in partnership has allowed us to broaden the appeal of the event and attract a superb range of competitors.”
Amateur and junior cyclists will also be able to take part in the event for the second time this year.
Two youth races will get underway at 11am for children aged under 14.
Then there will be a women’s race at 12.30pm before a men’s race for under-18s and members of local clubs at 1.30pm.
The men’s elite race will start at 2.45pm before a presentation at around 3.45pm.
Roads in and round the town centre will be closed from 10am until 4pm while the event takes place.
