A SOUTH Elmsall teenager has been suspended from college - for the colour of her hair.
Emily Mason, 13, was told by staff at Minsthorpe Community College that she could not return to class until her plum-coloured hair colour had been changed.
But mum Carol Mason, 31, of Rothergarth, said that the hair dye was not much different to Emily’s previous colour.
She said: “It isn’t just Emily who has her hair dyed in college but she is the only one who has been suspended. It isn’t a really bright colour. I could possibly understand it if her hair was bright pink or electric blue but it isn’t.
“And her last hair colour wasn’t that different from what it is now, so I don’t know why they have decided to do this.
“The college isn’t trying to educate her hair and it isn’t a health and safety risk or anything.
“She isn’t allowed to go back until it has been changed, which is ridiculous. Her education could suffer and she is missing all her friends at school.” She just wants to go back and see everyone.”
Emily, who missed celebrating her 13th birthday with her friends at college on Monday, said: “I was really shocked when the teachers said I would have to go home. Quite a lot of my friends have their hair dyed and they weren’t suspended.
“I am missing all my friends and now I am just looking forward to going back to college when they let me.”
Minsthorpe Community College principal John Gregory was unavailable for comment.
