Speed cameras for village

SPEED cameras are to be installed on the A638 Wakefield-Doncaster Road.

The West Yorkshire Casualty Reduction Partnership has given the green light for four speed cameras between Bracken Hill and Barnsley Road, Ackworth.

The partnership installs speed cameras in proven accident blackspots, where there have been at least three crashes causing death or serious injuries in the past three years.

For this road, the statistics showed four fatal or serious injury accidents between 2003 and 2005 and 17 collisions resulting in a lesser injury.

Roy Hirst, chairman of the Ackworth Parish Council road safety committee, said: "This is good news for the village and is long overdue. It is a fast road and – if you compare like for like – one of the busiest in the Wakefield district.

"The amount of traffic that goes through on a week day is unbelievable."

Ackworth councillor Allan Garbutt said: "I'm very pleased. Speed cameras are a real deterrent. The amount of accidents speaks for itself. We have to slow traffic down on this road and, for me, this form of control is the most effective."
