WOMEN and girls are being urged to sign up for Race for Life events taking place across the district.
Cancer Research UK is holding 235 events across the country, including a 5k run at Wakefield Thornes Park and a 5k and 10k run at Pontefract Racecourse.
The Wakefield race will take place at 10.30am on Sunday, May 27, and the Pontefract events will both take place at 10.30am on Sunday, July 22.
The Race for Life, which is held in partnership with Tesco, is the UK’s largest women-only fundraising event.
Cancer Research UK, which is the world’s leading cancer charity dedicated to saving lives through research, is aiming to raise £55m through Race for Life 2012.
Since it started in 1994, six million women have helped raise £457m towards fighting cancer.
The entry fee is £14 for adults and £10 for girls under 16 to cover the cost of staging the event.
Emma Gilbert, head of Race for Life, said: “All women can embrace Race for Life whatever their age, fitness level or background to raise money for all cancers.
“Every two minutes someone in the UK is told they have cancer. It touches so many lives and the back signs worn by everyone taking part are a moving reminder to us all that women are taking part to celebrate lives that have been saved but also sadly lives that have been lost.
“We are asking women from across the country to unite, take part in the biggest fight against cancer this summer, and raise money for Cancer Research UK’s life-saving work into all types of cancers, because it is all of us versus cancer and together we can help more people survive.”
