A shoplifter with a dreadful record has been jailed for stealing aftershave just days after getting out of prison.

Kevin James Lewtas, 29, was locked up for 12 weeks after admitting stealing £45 worth of fragrances from the Original Factory Shop on Barnsley Road, South Elmsall.

Wakefield and Pontefract Magistrates’ Court heard how Lewtas had a “dreadful record” of 53 previous convictions for 95 offences.

Prosecutor Diane Gomersall told how Lewtas went into the store with a carrier bag on April 5 and approached the display. He began spraying himself with perfume but then ducked down, out of sight of the cameras.

When he walked off his bag seemed bulkier and a quick stock check revealed several items were missing.

Lewtas, of Broadway, Lupset, Wakefield was stopped and found to be in possession of the aftershave.

He told police he had been released from prison on March 28 and didn’t have accommodation. An agency told him to go to a property shop but that he may need a bond.

The court heard he only had £4 on him and if he had got away with the crime he would have spent the proceeds on a bond.
